Anway: she wrote a (very positive) review on her website in which she made
an intersting conjecture: not only is JKR not particularly good at high
romance, she doesn't even like writing it very much. (Unless she's making a
joke of it, in which case she's devastating.) OTOH, what JKR is very good at
and loves writing about is friendship.

Debbie:
I'll agree with this observation and push it one step further.  JKR didn't
intend to write romance, and she intentionally handled the romantic
relationships in the same vein as the Canary Creams.  In light of the tone
of these books, her approach to the romances was about right -- they *are*
funny, right down to the scene in the Room of Requirement, which pokes fun
at the tendency of new lovers to expect the world to stop for them.

What would have been awful, IMO, is if JKR had actually tried to write
serious romance into the series, although that seems to be what a lot of
people would have preferred.  What a distraction that would have been, and
probably a bad one at that.
