I hope that the second idea you mentioned is closer to the mark!  It
might not represent quite so much messing with the book as the
flying-to-rescue-Sirius idea.

However, I can imagine that the film makers would love to have a way
out of the threstral scenes.  In the books readers only "see" the
threstrals because we're seeing from Harry's POV.  The movies don't
quite work that way, of course, and the audience shouldn't really see
the threstrals that the 6 students are riding.  So we _should_ just
see them riding through thin air, not a concept that the film makers
are apt to be too keen on, I'm afraid.
