If I were the one standing behind the
camera, trying to put this together as
true to the books as possible, yet
exciting for the 'movie fans' (people
like my mother who dont' read but go to
every movie), and still keep the studio
happy, I would jump at the chance to
change the mode of arrival simply for
it being cheaper, and frankly more
accessible to ALL movie goers, not just
those who read the book and know what
the heck a Thestral is.

The problem with this broom chase scene to me is logical, not logistical
(??) - it's not that they chose brooms over thestrals, which I can perfectly
well understand for all the excellent reasons you've given - but at what point
in OoP would Harry BY HIMSELF be flying on a broom in London???? Are they
going to cut out all of his friends from the battle in the Ministry??? That's
just not right -- their courage in going with him is remarkable and Neville
carrying the injured Hermione while not really being able to fight himself --
yet refusing to leave Harry -- shows remarkable courage (and a bit of
stupidity, I suppose, LOL!) on Neville's part. Hermione's being injured and Harry's
reaction to that, and Ron with the brain attack, Ginny with the broken ankle
she's just sure she can walk on, Luna's managing to survive longer than
anyone else but Neville -- all of these things build character as well as moving
the story forward, IMO. So they ALL need to go to the Ministry, not just
Harry! So why is he out there flying up (or down??) the Thames by himself, doing
his best James Bond impression (I admit, I can't wait to see it, but I can't
imagine what scene this "Harry alone" scene is logically replacing. There
was no "chase" involved in getting him to Grimmauld Place, either. I'm stuck
in a state of confusion!
