> Try Lois McMaster Bujold.  She has 3 series out, each very 
different from the others, although in some cases, calling them 
series is misleading.  All share a great sense of humor (even in the 
most unlikely of circumstances), nice use of language, and 
interesting ideas, with interesting characters.

I heartily second this recommendation. I love both the Vorkosigan 
saga and the fantasy series.

> The third series just started in October, with The Sharing Knife: 
Beguilement.  This is volume one of a duology; the second volume The 
Sharing Knife: Legacy, is due out about the middle of next year, with 
another loosely linked duology out in the following 2 years.  This is 
fantasy set in North America, or some place very like it.

Aaaarrrgh! No way I can get to Barnes and Noble until at least 
Wednesday. I had no idea!!
