Carol responds:
I second the suggestion. Another reason to read "David Copperfield,"
if you haven't already done so, is that (like "Jane Eyre") it's a
classic Bildungsroman (novel of growing up), one of several genres
that the HP books belong to. Essentially, the protagonist passes from
childhood Innocence through Experience (the rougher world outside the
home) to Wisdom (or at any rate, maturity). I won't say more because I
don't want to spoil the story. But you forgot to mention Aunt Betsy
Trotwood, another gem of a character, and the Byronic Steerforth, and
dear old Tommy Traddles. (I can't abide Uriah Heep. He's what BetsyHP
would call a nails-across-the blackboard character for me. But then,
he's supposed to be.)

Carol, wondering to what extent, if any, JKR was influenced by Dickens
