This is puzzling to me as well. I thought at first that he simply
favored Slytherin because it was his house, but I don't think it can
ever be that simple. I don't think Malfoy got him his job-- I don't
see any compelling evidence yet that he was connected to the Dark Side,
and in the first book at least, actively fought it in Quirrell.

Maybe he favors Draco simply to get up Harry's nose.

Why does he want it so badly? What is his background?

Yes, and he advised Draco to summon up the snake during the duel,
remember? He KNEW somethign about the effect that would have on Harry....

Yes, yes.. a very intriguing man! I want to believe that he is capable
of fallign deeply in love and being redeemed....
