Staying over at Christmas

I keep drifting back to what I know of English public schools (what
USA types would call private schools). Which is mostly from reading
and watching _Goodbye Mr. Chips_, bits of _Tom Brown's Schooldays_, a
_Sandman_ comic or three, Kipling's _Stalky & Co._, and Neil Gaimans'
autobiographical short story with a title something like "One Life
Decorated with Early Moorcock".

Just because the teachers are there at Christmas, doesn't mean they
are staying or living at Hogwarts the school. They may indeed have
quarters there, especially the Heads of Houses - in fact those almost
certainly do, since they are around late at night - but is there any
reason the others don't live in Hogsmeade, and come up to school for
Christms feast, for the same reason anyone might go out to dinner on
such a holiday? The other Profs don't *have* to go far away like
the
students - most teachers live in towns near their schools anywhere
you
go, right?

In other words they may not be so cloistered as we assume.
