of course, this IS pure speculation, because we know nothing of 
Snape's life before Hogwarts.

Ah, yes, poor Tom Riddle, fatherless, rejected, of course he turned 
out badly, as did Snape, sniff, sniff.

Yeah, most of the bad guys had terrible childhoods, but many of the 
heroes did, too. The difference is the choices they make.

Harry could easily have been malicious, angry, nasty, just like 
Tom Riddle. He was treated abominably by the Dursleys.

Yet he consistently made choices on behalf of right and justice.
That's the difference.
