But it's being Ron's last resort that hurts her feelings. I don't
think there's any way to put a non-personal twist on that. He takes
her for granted and assumes that nobody else could be interested in
her. If it was just about betraying Harry and Hogwarts (which I think
Ron only said because he didn't want to admit to the real reason for
his disappointment), she could have wiped that away without bringing
the personal note into it. Something along the lines of "That's the
stupidest thing I've ever heard and it's none of your business who
I'm going to the ball with."

I agree. Harry cares for Hermione differently but not more or less.

Can somebody please bridge the cultural gap and tell me what this

So Ron's way out of his identity crisis is a little woman who sits at
his feet looking up at him with adoration? If he can't work out his
problems for himself I doubt that is going to work. He needs to find
an area he can excell in and learn to respect himself.
