Marauder's Map problem

A quibble re: the Marauder's Map, and I think that the answer which
will probably come back is "suspend your disbelief!"
Is the map 3D. I find it hard to visulise how the whole of Hogwarts,
floor by floor, tower by tower etc can be reproduced on a Map unless
it is three dimensional or comprises of many different plans.
Has this been covered before or am I the only one so analy retentive?
