In addition to the reasons that others have listed, maybe Lily knew 
that the confrontation would have to happen eventually - it seems 
obvious that Voldemort was tracking down the Potters in particular, 
although we don't yet know why.

Perhaps she knew that the family wouldn't necessarily get out of the 
war complete and sacrificed herself for Harry, knowing the result of 
such an act, in the hope that at least he would survive.
