Not necessarily. Dumbledore seems to be pretty lax on students. I
mean, Harry seems to be able to get into a lot of trouble which
Dumbledore seems to know all about at the end of the novels.
Now, whether or not he (Dumbledore) knows about the Marauders and
their Animagi status... I would think if he knew, he'd keep it a
secret until (or unless) it became necessary to tell someone else.
Dumbledore seems like a person EVERYONE trusts with their secrets
(with the exception of Drace Malfoy, of course... <grin> ).
Also, Dumbledore seems to know what side the Marauders will fight on
in any upcoming battles (especially considering their rivalry with
Snape and Malfoy...) Has anyone heard of secret weapons or spies
before? <raised eyebrow> Having unregistered Animagis would be
useful during a war.
As for why Sirius Black can sneak onto Hogswarts... doesn't it say in
one of the books that (either PoA or GoF, I think) that Sirius told
the Potters, AND DUMBLEDORE to change their secret keeper to
Wormtail? Or did I misread that? It never says how many wizards you
need to make a secret keeper... only that only the secret keeper
knows where the secret-keepie(s) are hiding. If that is the case,
then Dumbledore would have known Sirius was innocent, and wouldn't
have bothered to secure the grounds against him.
Which brings up the question why didn't he stop Sirius from being
thrown in prison. the only answer I can give for that would be that
Fudge (or another MoM) wouldn't have believed the story. After all,
it does seem flimsy if you look at it without inside perspective.
Why WOULD the Potters change their secret-keeper from their best
friend (and great wizard) to Wormtail? Plus, with Wormtail's
stunning "death" - witnessed by Muggles and wizards alike, it would
seem like a cover up... I think Dumbledore had no choice but to let
Sirius get locked up, and I'm pretty sure he has regreted it ever
since.
Just my two knuts...
