But what reason did he have to even suspect anybody would follow him?
His office IS a private office, and given the time of evening, I
don't think he would expect anyone to just barge in there and
potentially SEE the map. Snape made no noise as he came in spy and
capture the crew. Lupin MAY have had time to think about the Cloak
and where it was (but do you HONESTLY think his brain is going to
focus on that when he realizes one of his best friends is a murderer,
while the other is now innocent--I seriously doubt he was thinking of
anything else), but Harry could have easily hidden the Cloak under his
robes or somewhere outside--Lupin had no way to know it was just
carelessly left under the tree. Snape, OTOH, rushed TO the tree to go
after Lupin, then saw the Cloak--which gave him the idea to sneak in
after Lupin.

I really don't see how you guys can blame any of this on Lupin EXCEPT
for the obvious dummy-headness of not taking his potion. BUT, then
again, like I said before, if you suddenly discovered a friend
presumed dead was alive, a murderer at that, while the other is also
on the grounds, would you really be thinking straight to begin with?
I picture Lupin settling back at his desk, steaming goblet in hand,
the Map catching his eye. He sets down the goblet to reach for the
Map, just to merely curiously check things out around the castle, with
the vague idea that HHR might be lurking around after Hagrid's cabin.
The idea probably gave him a small chuckle to think of them using his
friend's old Cloak. Then, he sees Pettigrew, drops the map instantly,
and dashes out of his office as fast as he can to GET TO PETTIGREW
BEFORE he looses track of him!
