There are at least two different interpretations of this scene:  the 
R/H one and the H/H one.  If you're interested, you can search the 
list archives for those messages; I think the last time it was 
discussed was March or April 2001.

Personally, I do think that the R/H interpretation of what 
transpired "before" the scene is the most likely.  I do not agree 
with the R/H rationale between Hermione's "Not As a Last Resort" 
comment, though.  But then, what do I know?  Hermione is probably 
madly in love with Ron and spent the entire Yule Ball sequence 
embroiled in much angst because Ron just doesn't "get it".
