Age range of HP books

  What age range do you think the HP books are intended for? I know 
JKR said that she didn't write it for a certain age range, but, what 
is the overall opinion?
  I mean, there are all ages right here in HPFGU, and younger 
children read it too. 
  Personally, I feel it is for the mature mind that can process the 
fact that Harry Potter is fighting off evil and facing death. He's 
growing up in a frightening world and death and those kind of things 
can scare smaller children.
  Thoughts? Opinions?
