In my opinion, Sirius was a Gryffindor, and I believe ALL the Marauders were
Gryffindors. Hagrid tends to exaggerate and generalize.

Anyway, one of the things that assures me that they are all in Gryffindor is
from past speculations of Lily or Hagrid being in another house. Upon being
asked JKR seemed surprised at the question (I can't remember if it was Lily
or Hagrid being asked about) and said "Gryffindor, naturally." That statement
has lead me to believe that people are speculating too much about the
Marauders by trying to theorize that they weren't Gryffindors. (That probablu
didn't make sense, but *I* know what I meant ^_^)

Another bit of evidence would be the fact that Siriuis and James are best
friends. Given the hostility between Gryffindor/Slytherin, and
Snape/Marauders, it seems unlikely that James Potter would be friend A
Slytherin, or vice versa.

In Goblet of Fire and Prisoner of Azkaban, Sirius seems to have no trouble
finding the Gryffindor common room and seems rather familiar with it. If he
was a Slytherin, how would he know anything about the tower? And I highly
doubt that James snuck friends into the tower under his cloak. That seems a
bit too fanfic cliche to be Canon.

Sirius himself seems to more or less have Gryffindor traits, more so than
Slytherin ones. He's obviously brave, escaping Azkaban and all, and he has
the "daring and nerve" of Gryffindor. He's not especially power-hungry and
his only ambition is keeping Harry safe.

So, unless JKR herself states otherwise, I will assume that Sirius was a
Gryffindor.
