Why did we start reading the books?

Not a terribly cool story here, I'm afraid.

I can't remember where I first heard about HP, but I think it was actually
on one of my fanfic lists. I didn't read the stories, but I remembered the
name. Then my best friend, who works in a library, recommended them to me,
and I remembered that I'd heard the name (this is the same person who got
me into Terry Pratchett as well). Then one day I was browsing in the book
section of a department store, saw the HP display, picked up PS, read it,
and the next week I went back and got CoS, then PoA, and later GoF (I had
to wait to get GoF because it wasn't available at a lower price, and much
as I love the books, I don't have the money to pay full price for a hardback).

And I'm here :).

Look, you're my best friend, so don't take this the wrong way. In twenty
years, if you're still livin' here, comin' over to my house to watch the
Patriots games, still workin' construction, I'll fuckin' kill you. That's
not a threat. Now, that's a fact. I'll fuckin' kill you. Chuckie (Ben
