Thank you, Amanda!
Clarification - I was not for one moment suggesting that Snape is a
coward, and as Amanda says, I am more interested here about what
other people's perceptions of Snape are.

Question: If Karkaroff isn't the one who has left forever, why does
Crouch/Moody seem sure that Voldemort is going to pursue him if not
to kill him? I know he says that the cowardly one "will pay" - but
that seems to me less drastic than the death which Crouch seems to
think is reserved for Karkaroff. I thought that the cowardly one
would be brought back on side - perhaps tortured a little, but forced
back into service. That's why I thought it was Snape. Another
thing - it is common knowledge in the wizarding world that Karkaroff
turned traitor - he betrayed people, he renounced Voldemort - he did
not pretend that he was under the Imperious Curse. Snape's position
is much more enigmatic. For all we know, Voldemort could have
thought that Snape was forced into working for Dumbledore - again,
Voldemort could have sent Snape to Dumbledore as a spy, not realising
that he had turned - and now thinks that he is too scared to come
back. The options are limitless.

What I am saying is, that it seems clear that Karkaroff has betrayed
Voldemort and the DEs and has therefore burnt his bridges. We do
not know the same for Snape - we do not know how he stands with
Voldemort. IMHO, anyway.
