I had a pet mouse (not quite rat, but close) - and I agree - the little one
was nearly always washing himself. Rats are also smart, and they are
survivors, managing to escape the place of danger pretty often. (Heck, Peter
Pettigrew managed to escape quite often. First, dropping a finger and
running away with other rats he summoned; in effect framing Sirius so he'd
not be able to track him and Lupin wouldn't bother because he'd doubt
Sirius. Pretending to be a pet for over 3 years (how didn't Weasleys
notice?? It's not like rats usually live that long individually, do they?)
Then, he manages to escape when Sirius got himself into Gryffindor Tower -
and again in Shrieking Shack.)
Ratlike indeed. The amazing Survivor.
