Snape and (sigh) Lupin

I agree; he's being perfectly reasonable here.  You could even say that none 
of my examples is convincing in itself.  But taken together, they show a 
pattern.  We don't see McGonagall or Flitwick wandering around the castle at 
night; we see Snape.

I also agree that Snape is not a rule-breaker per se.  But we know Harry's 
motivation is frequently not to break a rule but to do something that he 
thinks only he can do (go after the Stone in 1, solve the Chamber 
mystery/save Ginny in 2--a friend of mine just pointed out that there's a 
shift in PoA because he's breaking a major rule without any such noble 
motive, but purely because he wants to go to Hogsmeade).  This is the 
similarity--the stubbornness and, as Snape sees it in Harry, the arrogance 
of setting out on one's own to solve a dangerous problem.

Wait a sec.  Are you suggesting that Lupin forgot on purpose?  Why would he 
do that?
