I have heard that "hwyfar" means phantom, spirit or fairy. "Gwen" 
("gwyn" in modern Welsh) can mean "white" or "shining".

I only know this because my name (Gaynor),like Jennifer, is supposed 
to be a modern update of "Gwenhwyfar"(Guinevere). I don't see 
why "Ginny" couldn't be from this source too.
