Sure, I'm always happy to speculate. :-)
I always assumed it has something to do with Dumbledore's defeat of
dark wizard Grindewald in 1945. Hagrid became groundskeeper at
Hogwarts in 1943. Grindewald was an evil Giant wizard, and young
Hagrid acted as a spy to infiltrate Grindewald's giant army of
Giants. One of Grindewald's troops was Fridwolfa, Grindewald's
wife. She is the same Fridwolfa who abandoned baby Hagrid about 13
years earlier. Dumbledore sends Hagrid on a mission against
Grindewald, and Hagrid encounters his own mother. He reflects on
this a moment, then blasts her to bits because she is standing in the
way of Dumbledore's defeating Grindewald. This willingess to destroy
his own mother shows Hagrid would do anything for Dumbledore. As a
result, Dumbledore trusts Hagrid with his life.
This is entirely speculative, of course.
