<snip explanation of cross-book>

OK, now I get it. Upon further reflection, I really, really think I
have an example of cross-book second-time foreshadowing this time.

In PS/SS, when the kids are in the Forbidden Forest with Hagrid,
Harry talks to Firenze:

"If you're going to be cursed forever, death's better, isn't it?"
"It is," Firenze agreed, "unless all you need is to stay alive long
enough to drink something else -- something that will bring you back
to full strength and power -- something that will mean you can never
die. Mr. Potter, do you know what is hidden in the school at this
very moment?"
"The Sorcerer's Stone! Of course -- the Elixir of Life!"

Upon first reading, this looks like the "something" to drink to
restore full power is the Elixir of Life, and JKR gives us a direct
hint that this is the case. But this passage is also foreshadowing
of the potion of bone, flesh and blood potion in GoF -- second-time
foreshadowing from Book 1 to Book 4. What do you say, Professor
Luke? Can I raise my arms in triumph?

By the way, I said earlier that Scabbers' missing toe in PS/SS is
cross-book second-time foreshadowing. But now I can't find any pre-
PoA reference to the rat's missing toe in PS/SS. Did I imagine this?

Cindy (scurrying off to scan CoS to look for more second-time
foreshadowing)
