Why Voldemort doesn't challenge Dumbledore?

I'm fairly new to this group, so I'd like to say a friendly 'hello!' 
to everyone... before I jump right in:

While I think the Heir of Gryffindor theory to be quite believable, I 
don't think Harry could be Gryffindor's heir *by birth*. The Sorting 
Hat considered seriously putting him into Slytherin and I'm quite 
convinced it would have recognized Gryffindor's heir in an instant 
(even if not giving that knowledge away).
If Harry becomes Heir of Gryffindor through his deeds, that's an 
entirely different topic - but that wouldn't have any effect on what 
Voldemort did to his parents and himself, power-wise.
