Well, to answer your first question, we know that the Dursleys would 
rather die than to acknowledge magic and wizards to anyone.

As for Hermione's parents, I'm sure they are well aware and probably 
have been told by Hermione herself that they are not to discuss 
anything wizard related with other Muggles.

As for the getting along on both sides question, I think Hagrid 
mentioned the answer in the first book.  I believe he said that the 
Muggles wouldn't totally understand and would want magical answers to 
all of their problems and the wizards won't do that.
