They *do* have some sort of data network. JKR made an interesting statement
in a March '01 interview
(http://www.scholastic.com/harrypotter/author/transcript3.htm) with Comic
Relief:
"Wizards don't really need to use the Internet but that's something that
you'll find out later on in the series. They have a means of finding out
what goes on in the outside world that I think is more fun than the
Internet. Could anything be more fun than the Internet? Yes!"
I do wonder why we haven't heard about it yet - but perhaps the school's
Wizardnet connection was placed off limits after the twins were caught
downloading several scrolls worth of full color diagrams bearing only the
most tangential relationship to McGonagall's homework assignment.
But by the time OoP comes out, I expect that Hermione will be debating
transfigurational ontology in an international consultation, Harry
consulting the latest broomstick test results and Ron (screenname
"HotRodBroomDude593") hanging out on the Chudley Municipal Authority's
notice boards making perceptive comments like "HEY, DON'T U TINK THE CANNONS
ARE 2 COOL 4 WORDZ AND THE BRIGHTON BOMBERS PUUUUUUUUUKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Baaaaaa!
