 And I'll state again - it's no skin off Snape's back if Barty's ability to escape *again* and run off stirring up anti-Snape sentiment in either camp is neutralized - that would be the safest outcome for Snape. The Dementor wasn't his idea, but I can see why he wouldn't be in a hurry to hang himself out on a limb to stop it.
