Perhaps it is not that it is beneath them; so much as it is 
difficult. For instance, if Harry's Firebolt was stolen, how obvious 
would it be who had it? "Oh, yeah, I was just sent this firebolt from 
home to piddle around on, you know" And in terms of homes, there is 
probably magical protection of homes, and things inside of them, AND 
magical means of finding stuff.
