While I don't have specific canonical support, I do agree with your 
theory regarding Neville.  He is terrified of the Crucitus Curse, 
which seems to support that he personally has had some trauma; IE: 
maybe he was there when his parents were tortured and has a repressed 
the memory - It seems deeper than a memory charm more like part of him 
is fighting against being a wizard.  Which would support that he was 
present when his parents were tortured.  

Neville reminds me of the type of person who has greatness in him (he 
did try and take on both Crabbe and Goyle once) if only someone or 
thing can unlock it and his association with Harry might just be the 
thing.
