I don't think he ever saw any animal in any form on
the map. Yes - the animagi, but they're not really
animals, are they? There are never owls, or mice or
hippogriffs on the map, only humans. The map would be
too cluttered otherwise.
Now, that is an argument against the "Mrs. Norris is
human" theory, as well as the 1000 students at
Hogwarts theory. If there were so many people then
the map would be cluttered to the point of
uselessness. Surely, there cannot be more than a few
hundred students and faculty at the school.
