I think JKR is a writer, not a cartographer. We imagine a map of the
entire Hogwarts property on a single piece of parchment.  That need 
not be the case. A'la the fancy binoculars in GF, the map may have
features: at least a zoom capability, and perhaps even a search
feature.  What else would be handy?
