Severus? What's his driving ambition these days? Does he really want
recognition, or it is revenge he really wants? I'm always a bit
sceptical about the notion that Snape's driving ambition is to win an
Order of Merlin and the adulation of the people. If he really wants
adulation, why does he go out of his way to make himself disliked? <
I think what Snape really wants is to be *vindicated*. He wants to
say "I told you so" to the world, and to have the world reply, "Why,
yes, Severus, you've been right all along, we're really sorry we
didn't listen." That's what his actions in PoA were all about. He
didn't want the Order of Merlin for the glory, he wanted it as
tangible public proof that *his* judgement of Sirius Black has always
been the correct one, going back to the days of the Prank, when Snape
said, "Hey, this guy is a murderer," and the world said, "Don't be
silly, he was just fooling around, can't you take a joke?" And when
he loses it after Sirius' escape, it's not just because he missed out
on his vindication, but also because somewhere in the back of his
mind, I suspect a small voice was already whispering about the
possibility that he might've actually been wrong.
