I don't agree that he is afraid of death, although I suspect that 
when it is his time to die (I assume he will be doing this) it 
won't be dignified.  
 
But I say this because he could have achieved immortality without the 
Dark Arts.  He could have done the same type of research as Flamel, 
under the tutelage of Dumbledore, if he hadn't chosen the Dark Side 
so early in his life.  

I would say that there is something about the Darkness itself that he 
desires.  At this moment I don't have any idea what this something 
could be.
