Here's a thought of my own:
I still think Harry is the heir of Gryffindor, but that does not prevent 
him from having to make choices. Please, bear with me for a 
while
What if Trelawney's *first* prediction said something about 
Voldemort taking over completely, as opposed to something 
else like Voldy being defeated? 
Then Dumbledore would be working against the fates, and what 
if Harry is thrust into a similar situation? What if another *true* 
prediction comes about, predicting Harry's downfall? He could 
be confronted with either to give up and accept to defeat, or he 
could choose, as the Heir of Gryffindor, to fight against the 
prophecy.
A long shot, maybe, but not out of the question
