Why? We've seen how well a dedicated student like Hermione does in
his class.
He slams her down at every opportunity, not only insulting her for
being a know-it-all, but for insulting her appearance. Remember when
you were 14? How would you have reacted to a teacher insulting a
small flaw in your appearance in front of your peers?
Yeah, that dedication sure is rewarded. A dedicated student there is
probably in greater danger of Snape's wrath than a failing one.
I'd feel better about Snape if he was just hard on the Neville's of
the world because he demanded excellence. Hermione GIVES him
excellence and he slaps her down.
He comes off to me as jealous and afraid of students like Hermione,
for being young and having their future ahead of them and maybe,
perhaps <GASP> for having the potential to be more talented than he.
We already know he gets jealous of people better than him -- James at
Quidditch -- so why not students who might surpass whatever marks he
had?
And the ONE time Snape gets a chance to show off his DADA skills, he
blows his facts, alienates the entire class, and uses the opportunity
to try to settle a 20-year-old grudge. Sheesh, grow up.
I don't disagree Hagrid has a lot to learn about being a teacher. But
so...does... Snape.
And Hagrid seems willing to learn. Snape hasn't shown he is.
Again, the caution here is that if we find out Snape has been play-
acting, slapping Hermione down because he knew that if he didn't,
Draco and the others would tell their fathers Snape was being nice to
a mudblood, then OK. But I want that scene where that is explained
and I want some acknowledgement by Snape on how good Hermione is.
And Jenny, I am going to stop trying to convince you Hagrid has
potential. You don't like him. Fair enough. :)
All I'm trying to do is compare Hagrid to the rest of the staff. I
think the big guy holds up pretty well.

small little town, the clerk would tell me the stamps I needed and
give me change.
