Darrin:
>>But anyway, I don't think Virgin/Whore fits because the last thing
on
Harry's mind is actual sex. It just doesn't compute with the books,
which is why I got so aggravated at the attempts to shoehorn
sexuality into the books.>>
Here here! I've read the books twice, and not once, *not once* did I
think anything bad about the graveyard scene at the end of GoF, or
about Harry rescuing Ron...or about anything else floating around out
there, I'm sure. So I was pretty shocked when I read a post(s)
awhile back describing exactly why the graveyard scene was so sexual,
pointing out ever word and insinuation that could be taken in such a
manner, and going on about how obvious it all was. Becuase...um..it
wasn't at all obvious to me. And frankly, I shake my head at all
that as much as I do about the "underlying"(though not as underlying
as HP) homoeroticism in LotR.
Darrin:
>>Watching Hermione's slow and subtle growth from almost genderless
extra buddy to complicated young woman has been a joy to watch.>>
And it's also humorous to see Harry and Ron finally look at her and
go "Hey...waitaminute, you're...you're a *girl*!!"
Darrin:
>>My guess on Cho is that this will be the Don Quixote "true love,
chaste from afar" kind of thing. Somewhere in book 6, as Cho is
getting ready to leave, Harry will realize that she liked him too,
but he was afraid to approach her.>>
Really? Eh...Harry did approach her, though, and he got shot down
(though gently). And what happened with Cedric...Harry really did
seem to blame himself on that one, and I don't think he'll be
throwing himself at Cho anymore. Hmm, I'm rather curious as to how
Harry will think of Cho, now, because his crush could have been wiped
out. But only book 5 will tell, I suppose.
Frankie:
>>I agree-- the kids are... kids. Besides, wasn't the Virgin/Whore
theory debunked?>>
More like re-explained. And now it does make some sense. I think Kel
was trying to ask if anyone thought Harry would continue to view
girls as individuals, or if he would, as he went through puberty,
start divding them into "Whores" and "Virgins"(Well, that's what I
got out of the posts...but I could be entirely wrong).
Frankie:
>>Gents, I'm gonna let y'all in on a little secret. Women go to the
bathroom in groups to talk about you. And try on each other's shoes,
touch up the ol' lipstick, eyeliner and mascara, straighten pantihose,
go through each other's purses and make cell phone calls to people who
haven't shown up yet or left early.>>
And to cry! =P Don't forget that one, now... (BTW- Trying on
*shoes*? Really?)
HF:
>>Well, this *is* Percy we're talking about as well, and kissing
someone on the
sly in a classroom is definitely not expected decorum in any day or
age, even
now, and with Percy being a stickler for rules and a prefect and
all... that
would be a compromising situation to say the least.>>
Yes, now-a-days, getting caught kissing results in quite loud shouts
of "OOoooh!" Or "PDA! PDA!". And I didn't find Percy and Penelope's
situation as chaste, really, what with Percy being the shy, rule
abiding type and all.
HF:
>>I would also imagine that this says a lot about Fleur, that the
most
important person
in her life is her little sister -- not a Beauxbatons friend or a
boyfriend,
but her *sister*. Her terror when she got out of the water after the
time ran
out was really quite startling and refreshing, when the previous
narration has
her set up as the school's number one crush.>>
I think this did *alot* more for Fleur than talking about her
shooting her Veela charms towards Cedric, warding off a gaggle of
boys, or getting chased out of the bushes. =P
~Aldrea, who has yet to be seventeen....but it really can't be *that*
bad(I hope).
