I think in one of the interviews Rowling gave, someone asked her
whether there'll be more HP books after the 7, and she said something
like "What makes you think Harry will live thorugh book 7?" Anyway,
I can envision scenarios where Ron or Harry might die, but I just
don't see any way that Hermione will. If that happens, they'd be
left with two guys and no girl. My theory is that book 7 will come
down to a situation where Voldemort confronts Ron and Harry, and one
of them will sacrifice himself to kill Voldemort and save the other
guy's life. The survivor would, of course, "get the girl".

"Not to me it doesn't. For all we know, the "horrible" death could be
Voldemort's. I don't think the character has to be a sympathetic one
in order for the reader to identify his or her death as horrible. I
bet a good writer, which Rowling certainly is, could make Voldemort
die in a way that'll make us go "won't wish that on my worst enemy." "

Wouldn't it be just perfect if Voldemort's downfall comes not from
the hands of Harry or Dumbledore but from betrayal by one or more of
the DEs? There's a lot of speculation of which characters will join
the dark side, but I think it's just as likely that one of the DEs
will switch sides because he thinks it's to his advantage. We know
they wouldn't be above this.

"Since JKR has stated that there will be deaths (plural) I think that
students and others will die. She's already said someone will die in
book 5 that is a fan of Harry and that we've known from the
beginning. I think that's Hagrid. Namely because his character's past
has been revealed, there are no more hidden details to be revealed,
and he has fulfilled his "usefulness." He was Harry's first friend,
gave him his first real birthday gift, was his first taste of the
wizard world. It would be very hard on Harry to lose him."

I don't think that any important characters will die this early in
book 5 though. We were led to believe that someone important would
die in book 4, but with all due respect to Cedric, he's just not that
important a character. Maybe one of the Creevey brothers will die ...

PS This is off topic, and I don't know whether someone has pointed
this out already, but in the 9/2002 issue of GAMES magazine, the 22-
Across clue on page 19's crossword was "Harry Potter's friend
Diggory".
