I don't think you're too far off at all!  I think that the Priori 
Incantatem effect could've "called" Fawkes to the graveyard, and 
since Phoenixes can disappear and reappear at will, I think that is 
very possible that he was there.  Also, because Harry, Voldemort and 
the Death Eaters were a bit preoccupied (to say the least) at the 
time, Fawkes could've easily hidden from them.
