Near the beginning of PS/SS, there's the dream that Harry has after he's been sorted into Gryfindor.
He dreams Quirrel's turban is on his head and is telling him he needs to change houses because its his destiny. He refuses and the turban tightens painfully.

Now, is this really a dream of Harry's? Or was it Voldy talking to Harry using one of Harry's special talents that he's not yet aware of? If it is Voldy, then changing houses seems to be a possibility. I think it is a possibility to do so amyway because the Sorting Hat could have put Harry in either house. Therefore, if he said "I changed my mind: I want to be a Slytherin now" he proably would have been allowed to make the switch.

I think this is what happened to Snape. He started out in one house and then switched to another. This could one of the reasons for the dislike - or distrust - between him and James.

How about this? Snape started out Slytherin, changed to Gryfindor and when he got a job at Hogwarts, Dumbledore needed a head of Slytherin house - so he put the job with Snape who isn't happy about it.
