I agree.  I never thought much of Neville until the revelation in 
HPGoF about his parents' insanity.  I think it explains a good deal about 
him.  He's not had them for role models, for some reason or another no one 
seems to want to talk about what happened to them in the wizard world, probably 
due to the sheer horror of it.  We know he visits them regularly, he's got to 
have some inner courage to keep doing that.  It seems it would be easier to 
stay away and try not to think about them, but that's not what he does.  When 
Moody/Crouch showed confidence in him, Neville was able to perform to 
expectations.  Now of course Moody/Crouch had his own motives there, but still, 
it shows that Neville just needs someone to believe in him to help his own 
confidence grow.
