A question about Sirius

 At the end of GoF, when Dumbledore sends Sirius off on his mission 
to contact the "old crowd", I'm wondering how exactly he's going to 
do this. I mean, most of the world still thinks he's a dangerous 
criminal. Lupin didn't even know, so why would people who 
(presumedly) had less contact with the Potters know? I wondered if 
perhaps Dumbledore had informed them, but if Dumbledore has means of 
communication, why would he need Sirius to go get them? Any ideas?
