I'm gonna come out of lurk mode for awhile because this is a question
I actually know something about :) I think depression is definitely
the way that a Muggle would feel the presence of a Dementor. I don't
have my copy of PofA in front of me (or even nearby) but I believe
that Hagrid said that due to the Dementors in Azkaban it was
impossible to have a pleasant thought there. One could only think of
darkness and pain. I can't remember the exact wording, but I remember
it was as good a description of acute depression as I've ever read.

Michele (who has fought against acute depression all of her
rather long life)
