While engaging in an ambitious project to try and determine some sort of
class schedule, and thereby extrapolate the number of students, I came
across an interesting piece of info related to Quidditch and House Cup
points.

There was some argument as to how Quidditch contributes to House Cup points
a while back; I think it was concluded that we really didn't know. However,
I found a quote that actually tells us the direct relationship.

"Oh hello, Harry," [Percy] said. "Excellent flying yesterday, really
excellent. Gryffindor has just taken the lead for the House Cup -- you
earned fifty points!" (Chamber of Secrets, Chapter 11, pg 183, US first
edition).

Now, the only score mentioned in that game was 60-0, Slytherin. However,
this is before Fred and George start flying around Harry, trying to beat the
Rogue Bludger away, so it's very possible that Slytherin would have scored a
few more times. I would hypothesize that the winning team receives a number
of house points equal to the margin of victory. If the final score was
15-10, that would account for the 50 points. This is speculation, but we do
know that teams are awarded points immediately after they win.

Anyway, I hadn't heard anyone mention this piece of evidence before, and
thought some people might find it interesting.

(my actual project of coming up with a schedule might take a while; it also
seems like the Trio happens to be in a random class at any given time)
