Yes I've heard this before too, although I don't know in which
particular interview she said it. If anyone has the URL I'd be
grateful.
Now I'm definitely no authority on Christianity, but from what I
recollect from Religious Studies at school, the theory is that Jesus
was the son of god and was put on the earth to save others, and he
died so that others would live.
Now leaving religion out of it, it seems likely that Harry is an
innocent child who, for some reason has been pre-destined to
overthrow Voldemort and hence, become the saviour of the wizard
world. Perhaps the reason is because he is the heir of Gryffindor?
Maybe, like Jesus, his coming was foretold in wizard history books,
so in true Herod-style, Voldemort decreed that he should be killed
before he grew up to live out his destiny.
So if these parallels are correct, then Harry will almost certainly
die to save the wizard world. This idea fills me with horror, I've
read with mixed emotions some of the latest threads discussing the
things people dislike about Harry Potter, and I will freely admit
that I am deeply in love with Harry (in a purely innocent way, of
course) and if he dies I will be utterly, utterly heart broken.
The one redeeming aspect of all this is of course, that after Jesus
died, he rose again. I interpret that as meaning that although his
body was dead, his spirit lived on, as he came around and showed
himself to a few of his old buddies, as living proof that heaven, or
at least, some sort of afterlife exists.
So if death is inevitable for Harry, so will resurrection be. But
how will this resurrection work? Well I keep thinking of phoenixes
here. Maybe like a phoenix he'll be reborn into something else, or
perhaps his spirit will live on as a phoenix? Perhaps reincarnation
is a normal process for wizards? Dumbledore does state that James'
spirit lives on in Harry's patronus, so we know that spiritually
James is not far away when Harry needs him.
In fact if we take it one step further, maybe Fawkes is already the
spiritual incarnation of Godric Gryffindor or some equally groovy
wizard from the history of the wizard world?
However, having said all this, I'm not 100% convinced of this
theory. If his destiny had already been foretold, then surely he
would be known as 'The boy who was born to save the wizard world' or
something, not 'The boy who lived'.
Damn! This is the reason I rarely post anything on this board, by
the time I've finished writing up my theory, I've usually disproved
my own argument and end up putting the whole thing in the bin.
Oh well, if anyone has any thoughts to add...?
