Snape is the there to establish first-hand the past relationships he
had with Sirius, Remus and James. Had Snape not been there, there
would have been no reason for any mention of "the prank" to come up.
But, now Harry has a clearer understanding of what James did to
establish a life-debt situation with Snape. Could this be another
example of calm, reasonable, "Professor" Lupin using the situation at
hand to gently plant the idea of saving someone's life as a noble,
worthwhile act?

Surely Lupin knows of Harry's longing for a sense of connection with
his parents, especially his father. So, JKR sends Snape to the Shack
to give Lupin a plausible reason to draw a parallel for Harry - James
saved someone he loathed...therefore Harry can do the same.

Aside from MD or Lupin!MD, I think the three adults were placed
together to establish their relationships directly through their
interactions with each other. Why? Because it will have a bearing on
later books. We needed to see them together, not simply referring to
each other in passing conversation. This scene IMO, truly shows the
loathing Sirius and Severus have for each other, which we see again
very briefly at the end of GoF. And that is much more visible when we
see the characters interact, not just hear them mention the other's
name with acidity in passing.

I'm betting that there will be some crucial plot line involving
Sirius and Severus in future books. And the importance of whatever
happens will hinge on how they put aside or succumb to their gut
feelings about each other.
