I respond: 

I think this is a good idea. I just have one problem with it. The passing 
down of magical attributes (I assume you mean magical/power). While Lily 
could give Harry her green eyes and James his hair and natural athletic 
talents I think it would be hard to pass down magical attributes...what with 
muggle borns and half bloods and squibs and all those possibilities. pure 
blood born Harry could've turned out to be a squib just as muggle born 
Hermione turned out to be a witch. One can never tell. 

Or can they?
