>>I think though that the fact that she's been "talking about him
all summer," when she can have only laid eyes on him no more
than twice and had, as best we know, *no* interaction with him,
is indicative that she has a celebrity-related crush at that
stage.<<

Who was she talking to? Ron, clearly. Do we think Ron didn't
recount his adventures with Harry over and over again? Judging
by his behavior in GoF, he could hardly resist, even expanding on
them a little. Maybe that's why Molly thinks he's been in the
Forbidden Forest twice. <g> I'd say that Ginny's crush is more
than "celebrity-related" at that point.

>>>In each case, Ginny appears to me to have been
characterized as drastically younger than she is chronologically
speaking. This is glaringly true with PS/SS, where I would never
have imagined that she would be 10 yrs old! This isn't Ginny's
"fault" per se; I just find Rowling's characterization of her to be
very odd really.<<

I'm not sure it's fair to compare Ginny to Hermione, till we know
what the age difference really is. It may be two or even three
whole years. Hermione seems more mature than Lavender and
Parvati too. Is making Ginny act younger than her years odder
than making Hermione act older?

It isn't only a matter of age-appropriateness. Hermione is very
concerned about her dignity. She complains about people
"behaving very childishly, running up and down the corridors."
We don't see *her* being stunned when Harry needs the
practice. I can't imagine Hermione chasing a train down the
platform at any age. She'd probably tell you shrilly that it's really
dangerous.

Hermione works hard to maintain her image. She hides in the
bathroom to cry. She doesn't want to let anyone see what the
polyjuice did, though she's always advising Harry to get help.
She won't let Harry or Ron see when she needs comfort, though
she seeks it from Hagrid offstage in PoA.

Ginny's lack of concern about such things, her childlike joie de
vivre, might appeal to Harry. He's missed out on most of his
childhood, and now it's essentially over. He never had a chance
to chase a train or hold hands with someone except when he
was being yanked along. He has some catching up to do.
