Here is my theory on this....by the way I am new here so hello 
everyone...anyhow my theory is that Sirius found out, that Pettigrew 
was passing information to Voldomort for a year before, from some one 
he met in Azkaban..perhaps a DeathEater. It was said that Peter was 
not only on the run from his friends but also the Death Eaters 
because they felt that he was responsible for Voldomorts downfall for 
giving him information on the Potters.  Perhaps one of the Death 
Eaters in Azkaban knew why Sirius was in there( the supposed murder 
of muggles and Pettigrew) and was congratulating him on finishing off 
the person who essentially killed off the Dark Lord. I don't think 
Sirius is evil...he is one of my favorite charactors....he he he
