Well, I am a new member so excuse me if this has been discussed already:
       Sirius was in Azkaban for 10 years.  Presumably he could have heard 
discussions from others imprisoned there.  In addition, he could have found 
out alot of information once he was out of Azkaban. If his version of events 
was true, he would have a vested interest in finding out the real betrayers 
of James and Lily so as to be in a position to better protect Harry.  We as 
readers do not "hear" his side until the ending chapters of POA. 
        Now of course, he could be evil.  I for one would be sad for Harry if 
this were true.  Trust, once broken, is so hard to rebuild.  Harry already 
has so many difficulties with the idea of family.  I would hate to see one of 
the few people that gives Harry any idea of what love/ family, etc. is become 
"evil" or be revealed as "evil."
