"Dumbledore lowered his hands and surveyed Harry through his half-
moon glasses.

`It is time,' he said, `for me to tell you what I should have told
you five years ago, Harry.
Please sit down. I am going to tell you
everything.'"

Gesturing toward Fawkes reposing upon his perch, Dumbledore said, "It
all began many years ago, when
."

Suddenly, the door burst open, with a vivid flash of lilac. "I'm
back – back at last!" A gaunt and disheveled figure – yet a gaunt and
disheveled figure with wavy blonde hair, dazzling teeth, a hat set at
a jaunty angle, flew to the center of room It took Harry a moment or
two to register that he was looking at his old Dark Arts Professor,
Gilderoy Lockhart.

Lockhart seemed unaware of Harry – all of his attention was focused
on the figure of the Headmaster. "So we meet again, after three long
years (or is it four? Who can keep these things straight?). Three
long years since you committed me to St. Mungo in that straitjacket
(symbol of pain and suffering). Three long years of individual
analysis, counseling, group therapy, treatment plans, mnemonic
lessons – three years without book signings, devoted fans, lecture
tours, photo ops – three years without so much as a damn hair
styling. How did I survive it? I remember only forcing myself,
sleeplessly, endlessly to exist
.kept alive only by dreams of
vengeance - against you!. I am back, Dumbledore, you did not conquer
me – and now – I conquer you! Obliviate!"

Harry later thought that Dumbledore's chronic habit of looking
faintly amused while others were displaying emotional paroxysms did
not serve him well on this occasion. Hence, the Headmaster, not
seeming to regard Lockhart as a much of a threat, made no effort to
defend himself as Lockhart whipped out his wand to erase the old
Wizard's memory.

"Where am I?
.why, who are you young man? And sir, where ever did you
find robes of such an attractive color? And, oh, such a beautiful
bird! Polly want a cracker?
.."
